The man who headed ESA ’s Smart-1 Moon mission, Bernard Foing, explains: The Moon is full of resources. ESA chiefs say the planned Moon Village, which would be built by 3D printers, could help. The space agency has been touting the permanent lunar colony as a replacement for the orbiting International Space Station, which is due to be decommissioned in 2024.Īlso on the cards is a NASA-led project to build the first lunar space station as part of a programme called the Deep Space Gateway. A MANNED base on the moon should become reality by 2030, according to the European Space Agency. The Moon Village concept, first proposed by ESA Director General Jan Woerner, is based on global cooperation among multiple nations and industry partners. "I think it's the right time now to start discussing, start planning for something which is as inspiring as the space station but on a truly global, international-cooperation basis." #Esa moon village series"There are a series of missions planned to the moon over the next 10 years, and all these missions will create a movement, a momentum, and will create a wealth of data that will enable building the village," he added. The mission would see robots set up shop on the moon first, eventually paving the way for a human colony. The moon village will be built using 3D-printed structures and regolith, a naturally occurring material on the Moon that would shield the base from radiation. 'My intention is to build up a permanent base station on the Moon,' he tells Euronews from the agency's main control room in Darmstadt. The announcement is sending a new found positive energy throughout Europe. Messina said the more immediate goal was to have a permanent presence on the Moon, even if it was just a robot, by the end of the next decade.
